Vintage Dress shoe appreciation, tips, maintenance and advice

I worked in the shoe store in late 90's. Eastland made one model of boot with the lug sole and buckle on the side. I do not remember seeing such boot on Timberland's catalog from 90's onward.

Eastland model look little bit like your first picture with the sole like that of the second picture.

They were similar to these boots — The Brooklyn. They were slightly more streamlined. They were burgundy with a black lug sole.

I picked up a lovely pair of Hartt's 4 eye bluchers today, dating to between 1958 and 1968. They likely date earlier in this range, as they still have the Hartt liner tag and are stamped Hartt Custom Grade on the sole. Both of these traits were discontinued sometime before 1968. This pair, which are 8E, were built on the famed 65 "Brentwood" last, which has a lovely almond shaped toe. I have included an as found picture. With my 20% discount they set me back $12 CDN.

Incoming: shell AE Sanfords. These are pretty cool. In fact, I didn't know these came in shell. The restrained and impulsive sides of my conscience fought for a couple of hours about whether I should make this purchase. I conferred with a member of my Shoe Buying Advisory Board (SBAB), @CWOyaji. He approved of the condition, style (could be worn to work or the grocery store), and the price ($90 shipped). After some bad experiences with dry shell, I asked the seller to inspect them carefully. This inspection included bending the eyelets to see if they crack. All tests came back negative. And so they are on their way to NorCal.

Those are great but might be less great if they are polished cobbler. I’m a huge fan of straps on shoes. These are all AE.

I am reasonably sure that these two alleged forum "members" are, in fact, thrifting collectives. There can be no other explanation for how they are able to find such remarkable treasures when I find none... ever...

Part of that might be because I only go to a thrift store maybe once every 6 months but nevermind these small details and facts.

Agree. I go a few times a year. The one time, I hit 7 thrift stores in one day and found about 20 pairs to flip. But I never find shell cordovan in Canada. Mostly local brands and the odd AE.

I go three times a week to multiple stores and typically find two things: jack and ****. Occasionally I'll find something better than that but not often.

That's about my experience. I'll sometimes find some decent clothing given the area where the store is located. But shoes... forget about it. I've never even seen anything that I would have considered when I was buying crap shoes years and years ago.

That concept doesn't exist over here.

Most of our second hand goods stores in Japan are very selective about what they take in, and they know (and research) the value of stuff so there are never any bargains to be found.
