I love old manual and automatic chronographs like Baume and Mercier, but I would occasionally like to wear a more reliable and unfussy modern watch, but can't find anything I like under a grand that isn't enormous. The UnDone Killy is probably the closest I have seen but it has something like a 42mm case. My wrist is 2.5" across and gets gobbled up by something like that, whereas older watches have more reasonable <40mm cases. Any idea of something that might fit the bill? Even the new Hamiltons and Longines are pretty big. I love the Kent Want Art Deco tank, but it is really, really huge -- 50mm vertical dimension in effectively 2" high, which, I think, will make my arm look ridiculous.

Check out Baltic watches. Handful of well-designed (IMO) 38mm manual wind chronos. Definitely fit the vibe you're looking for.

Seiko Presage are 40.5mm and definitely a bargain price while still being automatic.
