Are you certain of their provenance? It is surprising to see bespoke Cleverleys stiched aloft - the heel looks bespoke but not the sole - could they have been repaired out of works - but retaining the original heel?

I don't think the shoes are (were) stitched aloft. You can see the stitches now, as the flap covering them has worn away over the years.

I have a pair of New & Lingwood bespoke from 1978 (thrift shop find). Their soles look very much like the Cleverleys.

^ I personally do not think they look terrible. They have loads of character and with some care would look even better. It is just, as I said, that I think what you are asking for in terms of renewal can't be achieved. And yes, no guarantee they won't fall to bits.

Most of what you see as cracking there is just too much laying on of spit shine/almost bunned polish. The leather is otherwise sound and the odd stitch needs doing. I suppose what they need is gentle deconstructing.

But I can see stiching on the waists as well as the foresole. Mmm - puzzling

Got some good news today by total serendipity. I could not find a car park in town after dropping off the missus to her dentist. So I took off to a famous old neighbouring suburb and then out of the corner of my eye I saw what I had been looking for . A famous pair of Polish brothers who make shoes. I found a car park around the corner and went in. The guys are like 89 and 87 and have survived the War and Russian and German concentration camps. Anyways no trouble to fix the Cleverleys and yes all hand sewn....will keep everyone posted.
