I would say moderate flaw. I know that wasn't an option, but I only consider structural issues to be major and this isn't structural. It's not acceptable either still, so gonna make a new category of moderate.

I don't think it's reasonable either.
So they did respond to my follow up and said they would exchange and credit me the difference for the upcoming Essex workshoebutt. It’s an interesting option, but I can’t tell if the Essex just looks kind of…boring? The photos just look like another brown boot. I love the 9 eyelets though. Do you all think it would look sharper in person? I’m new to the world of horsebutt/workshoebutt.

I would agree from a boot construction point of view it could fall in between major and minor, but what about from an aesthetic point of view. If you can’t bare to look at it, then it could be a major flaw.

From the photo alone, I like the Essex boots and would probably go for the exchange.

But if you are not feeling the Essex, take the refund and use the funds elsewhere.

But also from an Aesthetic pov, I think you can hide if not fix this with correct and careful dye and waxing, probably. I am in full agreement that isn't acceptable. I just like moderate.

I disagree with this -- at least in the way that you worded it here even though I am not sure it's quite what you intended. The leather is spider webbed around the brogue trim. I think it's a little difficult to predict what will happen to that leather over the long haul. Is it stable? Maybe? I'm not sure it's possible to draw any certain conclusion.

I do agree that it may be possible to hide the damage, for now, with dye and/or waxing. The appropriate way to apply dye is to strip the top coating of the leather and re-dye the boot. In this case, that's probably overkill and it would better to dye with a thin paint brush and make best efforts to color match.

If this damage were, let's say, around the heal cup which is reinforced, not that obvious of a spot, and not that prone to flexing/stretching it would be one thing. But on the edge of the toe cap where it is both more obvious and more subject to stress? I have to go with major defect. Barring some massive discount, there is no question that I'd return them no matter how rare the leather is. There will be other boots. JMHO.

I'm agreed that they should be returned, but you can have something that should be returned and potentially salvageable. I think its more that a major flaw is something that should be returned and cannot be salvaged no matter what. The examples on here so far have varying levels of how roughly the brogueing was punched, and many of them are just sloppy punching. The specific pair you are referencing is a bit worse, there's a pair in the BST thread right now that is probably easier to salvage I would say. I think we're in agreement, but are having difficulty on phrasing haha.
