I just noticed the Baker release is another pre-order. So many theoretical boots for sale these days.

Obviously shouting into the void, but it's frustrating that Viberg offers zero customization/options on these orders.

The plan for this year is SS22, AW22, shell preorders, non-shell preorders, and as many restocks of core stuff as they can. If they do add anything it'll be at the mercy of the factory and supply chain. I think everywhere is going to remain pretty restricted this year, not just Viberg.

One day there is going to be a good business case written about these past couple of years, and the details it will have will be really interesting to read.

Eh, I buy that for volume, but the decision to limit customization is about brand management.

Its a lot easier to do 20 boots in the same exact spec than 20 different ones

It seems to me that Flame Panda is the new Viberg. If you're willing to pay Viberg money then you're likely to spring a bit more for what Flame Panda offers and you're only looking at Viberg to begin with because you're really into boots.

Does Flame Panda offer RTW? I’ve always thought of flame panda as more similar to Role Club as they’re both pricey MTOs with lengthy lead times.

Peng does a lot of different stuff and also has access to different leathers. He can't source workshoe butt for example. He's also MTO mostly only where Viberg is mostly RTW. So yeah you can buy FPs, but you're going to be waiting about a year or longer now, and paying more than Viberg cost. There's no returns or exchanges, but the resale market for his stuff is pretty good.

Honestly I don't think it's fair to Peng to say that. He has his own patterns and lasts and does a lot of unique things. He also doesn't do some of the stuff Viberg does either. He's a standalone maker and I don't think he ever set out to copy Viberg. The man is an artisan in his own right.

Interesting post. I have to say though - I'm still waiting a long time for certain type of Viberg as well and who knows how long I'll be waiting for. Their inventory isn't exactly great.

I almost never weigh in here but I just don't get the Bakers makeup.

J&FJ Baker might be the best tannery left in the world for traditional vegetable tanning. Until recently their only leather for *uppers* was waxed flesh calf, which is great but you almost never see.

A few years ago though they developed what's *by far* the best replica yet of the Metta Catharina Russian reindeer, and now you're seeing it more and more. It's thick, tough, characterful, and smells amazing (in a Zabar's Nova sort of way).

But it's all about the grain.

So of course Viberg does a makeup in the same leather…but WITHOUT the embossing ?. Huh?
