has anyone tried the 2020 last and is an E/EE width? whats your sizing advice?
The 9D 2020 is as wide as an 8.5E 2030 IME. Either plan to wear thinner socks in 2020 or go up a half size. Tbh I hope Brett releases the 2020E width sooner than later.

Hypothetically, are there circumstances where you'd prefer a wide 2020 over standard 2030?
The issue with the 2020 is I'm sort of in between sizes on it. I can wear both an 8.5 and 9 and own both an 8.5 and 9 in it. The 8.5 is thin socks only though and and the 9 lets me wear boot socks which I prefer, but it's a bit long. The safe bet is going to be size up a half size, but I expect a decent amount of these to wind up for sale when people realize they don't know their 2020 sizing.

Internal materials? Like wood shank vs metal?
Alden is a different kind of brand than Viberg, in spite of Brett trying to sell us actual oxfords nowadays. Viberg is technically a PNW brand, where Alden is an old timey American dress shoe maker. Both brands are great and I have multiple Aldens will go on to own more in the future I'm sure, but they're different aesthetic and feel.

Leather heel & toe stiffeners, midsole, and heel stack, thicker insole & midsole, no canvas gemming, brass nails.

It may be that you don't value any of that, but it puts them in different tiers in terms of construction cost.
I actually didn't realize all of this, thanks for the education

Sort of. There was a time when the medical and orthopedic sales were their bread and butter. They phased those out in the 90s when they switch focus to formal and casual footwear.

Yeah that's true, but the current Alden at least is a classic American dress shoe maker I would say.
