I have the Horsebutt version from Division Road and I really love it. It’s one of my favorite purchases of this year.
+1 on this - great boots; beautiful leather.
I'd assume that the cowhide version would be different, for sure. For one thing, horsebutt has a lot tighter grain than cowhide, and there wouldn't be the "shell" membrane underneath the cowhide. But if the tanning process is the same, they'd probably end up pretty similar in look, feel, and pullup. Not sure what you mean by "special", but 3sixteen is a known quantity, and I don't think they'd put out anything that sucked. The 3sixteen is likely cowhide, though, right? Big difference. Is the same tannage in cowhide enough to give you confidence in 3sixteen's makeup being...special?
Sounds like you're trying to justify to your wallet. But the cowhide version is unlined and very stiff, while i haven't handled the horsebutt version that looks to be thinner weight as well as a lot more oily. The special thing about both these leathers is the huuuge variance that each batch, hide will provide. Horween applies a hard wax to these that really changes the finish, but the base tannage allows for some really cool grain character. I wouldn't say that the cow hide is inferior, it'll just have different characteristics. The 3sixteen is likely cowhide, though, right? Big difference. Is the same tannage in cowhide enough to give you confidence in 3sixteen's makeup being...special?
