TL;DR - keep the same sizing in both versions.

Pattern and manufacturing changes to the 2030 last have resulted a noticeably different silhouette, which is what most people refer to when making a distinction between “old” and “new” 2030. In addition to aesthetics (and denser SPI), the new pattern fits noticeably differently, with less heel cup and more instep space than the older pattern.

Although these pattern changes occurred over time, they became most pronounced from around mid-2020 onwards, resulting in a “new” 2030 pattern from the 2012-2019 era of the last…

While the aesthetics of the pattern have changed, there is actually more room in the new version and the consensus is it fits a wider variety of feet better than the older pattern (supposedly one of the reasons for modifying the last).

Sizing guidance remains the same for both versions though (.5 down from Brannock for optimal ball placement), and you should take the same size in the “new” 2030 as the “old” 2030 (i.e., no change)…

For comparison, “old” (top / first pic) and “new” (bottom / second pic) 2030 silhouettes…

Been curious about this for a while now.. my pre 2018 boots are 8.5 but my feet pretty much float in them even with thicker socks. But size 8 back then was too tight. I needed the 8.5 for the toe box width even though the heel and foot length felt a little big.

I am wondering these days if I could break in an 8 instead of having an always looseish 8.5

What cobblers in the US have you guys used that do a good job for Viberg stitch down resoling? I’m looking for a one that basically matches the way they come from the factory with the Danite stitch down construction.

Thanks!

Wyatt and Dad hand stitches the soles too. Excellent work. Think Unsung and Wyatt and Dad are the two most people are using these days

+1 for Unsung. They resoled a pair of boondockers on a double leather sole for me a year or two ago and did a great job.

To close the loop on this, I went with my same 2030 last size from 2018, and I am very glad I did. If anything, the new 2030 last boots fit slightly smaller on my foot (both are unlined).

A small sample size, but hopefully a helpful data point for others.

I don’t see any new additions from their last sale… just more leftovers they’re trying to move with no [further] price reduction.

They need to expand sizing options. Some boots only go to 12 and the rest 13.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
