I've been seeing this look on the blogs: a sport coat or suit with a cold weather shell or quilted vest over the top. The shell can look okay if it's not too techie, but I"m not sure what to think of the vest. Opinions? (Come on - you know you all have them!)

Jacket/shell over SC:

Vests over SCs, suits:

and one vest under the SC, featuring the somewhat-douchey-but-often-well-dressed Styleblogger:

They look shite user a SC as they are usually too bubbly for the SC to fit properly.

They look absolutely shite and ridiculous over the top. Someone did this recently in WAYWRN and the reply post stated simply 'the ship is sinking - women and children make your way to the lifeboats'.

Au contraire...i like this look a lot. It´s been the italians who started it and it makes a good compromise between fresh air and still looking neat.

I think it looks horrible either way.

I have seen some sport coats that are manufactured with a sewn into them and I like this look a lot for casual wear. However, trying to pull it off with a separately purchased vest looks awkward to me.

People who don't know any better will like the vest idea. It is either too contrived or willingly and utterly contemptuous. Why any man would spend a great deal of time, effort and expense into observing classic menswear and then deliberately bastardize it is beyond my understanding.
Tha man on the right is doing it acceptably, imo.

I think the right vest/gillet over the top can look fine. The weather has to call for it and I think it works better with slightly more rugged/casual jackets, like tweed, than a worsted suit.

Mr Styleblogger with his gillet over his jacket looks fine in my opinion.

I think people hit a certain point in their fashion/style/sartorial journey where what they were doing is not enough, so in an effort to be different or try something new they do something stupid.

If it's cold and you want to layer-wear a sweater vest or sweater or cardigan to layer under your sc or suit. I mean if it's cold wouldn't you want to be able to button your jacket?

Vests over sportcoats/suits? why not just get an overcoat =_=.

I have a british tan jcrew down vest I wear over a navy or grey jacket on some cold days, usually done when when an overcoat is overkill and I just want to stay warm enough from my car to the office or when I go grab lunch. Whatever. Say it looks stupid, I dont' really care.

Agreed! As fashionable as wearing one's underwear over his trousers...
