Very Basic Edward Green Question

I am finally going to take the leap and pay the full retail for some EGs. I have a couple pair, but they are from Ebay, here and there at steep discount. I really like the Canterbury. Just a couple questions and solicitations for advice.

1. I want a dressy shoe to wear with suits. I'm a litigator, so this would be a courtroom/deposition/mediation/arbitration shoe. I am leaning toward the Canterbury. Good choice? I have straight up captoes, perf toes, etc.

2. I am looking for something that would go well with charcoal suits (I seem to have a lot of dark grey suits). Is the dark oak the best choice? Let's hear some creative thoughts.

3. Is there any chance of my finding a size 13 US in stock somewhere, or do I have to order? I think it is the latter, but wanted to make sure.

4. Which last? I have two pair with the 888, and it is a little pointy for my big hoppers. I like it, but what might be another option?

Any help would be most appreciated!

I've seen a fair amount of UK 12/12.5's in stock at places (although not lately), so I would imagine someone has them.

I'd suggest dark oak (I'm assuming you don't want black) on the classic 202 last. Perhaps something like these Asquiths . . .

P.S. I like the Canterbury, I just think for your purposes, the Asquith, while similar, might be a bit more refined and less "jaunty". IMHO.

1) Is that the adelaide? If so, fine choice.

2) If you don't have black, then you need black. If you do, then dark oak is the safest of the browns. Burnt pine and chestnut also work. Lighter than chestnut, with charcoal, is a statement that you are into clothes and like to break the rules.

3) These probably have to be ordered.

4) Your primary consideration should be which EG lasts fit you well. They do not all fit the same. Aesthetically, I don't really like 888 or any of the extreme square toed lasts. I am now a round toe partisan.

Manton, you say "now" . . . did you find that your tastes evolved to like the classic round toe lasts more, or have you always preferred those?

I once salivated for chisel toed shoes like the 888, but find that I've grown to much prefer the subtlety of the rounded toes.

I still like the Cleverley chisel a lot, but I don't think any RTW square toe compares.

On the whole, even the Cleverley chisel appeals to me less these days than a nice round toe.

I do have a decent contingent of black shoes, including a pair of EG wingtips. Thanks for the thoughts, guys.

I do like 606 and got a recent pair of Shannons on that last.

A little off topic but have been thinking about this for a while (i.e. finding the EG last that would fit me best). Where in Manhattan would they have the widest selection of lasts in different sizes? Whats the best way to go about finding which last is the best fit for EG?

thanks - it seems like such a simple idea but ive never come up with a satisfactory answer. im still surprised sometimes that EG doesnt have a boutique or something similar in manhattan (a la lobb or C&J in T&A).

Actually, wasnt there a new high-end shoe store that was opening in NY that was going to carry EG? i dont remember the name of it but was getting emails for a while that it was coming?

I love the 202 and 82, and the 505 for casual shoes (like the Dover). 606 might be okay, though I would always take the 202, 82, or 505 over the 606, given the choice. I wouldn't touch the 888 with a ten foot pole, but I'm pretty extreme on that opinion. I would encourage a black shoe. If these are your first EGs, they should be shoes you will wear often and which are ever-appropriate. That means black to me, especially if you're wearing them with charcoal or navy suits. Canterbury is a fine shoe. I have been interested in buying a pair for a while. Asquith or Cadogan are also excellent (both semibrogues, though the Asquith lacks heel counter broguing). Finally, you might try something simpler, like the Russel, Churchill, or Berkeley, all of which are perfed captoes, of varying diameter perforations. If you do decide on the Canterbury, try Tricker's Belgrave first. It is a FINE shoe, and half the price. I hear they run wide. The last on all these top-grade Tricker's seems to be something akin to EG's 606, and I think it works. The shoe in the bottom of the photo posted in post #17 in this thread is the Belgrave: http://askandyaboutclothes.com/forum...ker%27s+regent

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
