Are pleats (central or on the sides) necessary on a shirt? Or is it just for RTW to accomodate as many people as possible?

Can center pleats be turned into side pleats? My Barbera shirt that I had the pocket removed from has center pleats, and I would prefer side pleats.Necessary? No.
Many consider side pleats a nice styling feature.
Center back pleats? Ugh. Except on Safari or Hiking shirts.
What's best for fit? (I have rather narrow shoulders and I rather slim overall). Many consider side pleats a nice styling feature.
Yes - any good seamstress can do that. Can center pleats be turned into side pleats?
Side pleats. They place the extra fullness where it is needed which is over the shoulder blades. What's best for fit? (I have rather narrow shoulders and I rather slim overall).

1/2" to 3/4" is usual for side pleats. If the shirts are pressed correctly, a 1/2" pleat will "dissipate" after about 5" or 5 1/2"; a 3/4" pleat will go a little longer, maybe 6" plus.My question on pleats is, how deep are they, or is there a standard, and how far down does it extend downwards.
