I need some advice. Yesterday I bought quite a few suits both to resell on the forum and for my own personal collection. Part of my purchase included several velvet suits. One is a bona fide tux. It has satin shawl lapels, no vents and striped pants. It's a real beauty. The other is just a black velvet suit. No tux detailing.

Now, I love black velvet. I like the idea of a black velvet tux, and I also like the idea of a sporty velvet blazer or pair of pants or even a sporty velvet suit.... Now, I know the tux meets the tux requirements, but it can't be worn for the other purposes. I know the velvet suit can be worn as a suit or separately as a sportcoat or velvet pants. But I need to know whether the suit can double as a tux as well. Can it be worn as evening wear, or is it too sporty? It seems that the velvet is sporty (or at least a little flashy) so unless it's obviously meant to be a tux (such as with the satin lapels, etc), it shouldn't be worn as evening wear.

If I'm correct, and the tux is strictly a tux and the suit strictly not appropriate for dressy occasions, I'll keep both. If, however, the suit can double as both, I'll keep just the suit and sell all the tuxedos.

Pictures of both are posted here.

Please advise.

Thank you!
