Vegetable peeler

    Ok this is a dumb question, but I am eternally frustrated by how crappy the veggie peelers I buy are. Some work well for a little while but dull so quickly that the barely function. Is this just the reality of peelers? You use them till they suck and throw em out? Should I just buy the cheapest one I can find?

    Restaurant guys - what do they use in professional kitchens?

    I use a Tasker peeler, extremely sharp and comfortable. Sometimes hard to find. [​IMG] Don't put them in the dishwasher tho.

    i like the oxo for most things, and i've got a serrated messermeister for others. i think it's a matter of preference whether you like yoke-style peelers or swivel peelers. And i actually find a really sharp peeler (like the messermeister) is sometimes disadvantageous because it takes a lot more than i want it to (including tips of my thumbs if i'm going quickly).

    Cook's Illustrated did a product review on a variety of vegetable peelers a few years back. They highly recommended both the Messermeister Pro-Touch Swivel Peeler, and the OXO I-Series Swivel Peeler, both relatively inexpensive options.

    Definitely respect Cook's Illustrated.

    Think I can find any of these without having to order it online? Sur la table, w&s, etc? or Would it be cheaper just to order?

    i dont' think there's that much price difference. i use the messermeister for just a few tasks, like peeling raw peppers, etc. the oxo is my go-to. you can often find them at marshall's, don't remember how much.

    OK, here's a weird spin on it ... how many people peel pushing away from your body, and how many peel pulling toward it? I see lots of people pulling toward, but I learned to push away and it just feels wrong to do otherwise. and i think those yoke peelers definitely do better pulling toward.

    I listen to Jacques Pepin who says you should pull toward. BTW, I like the OXO peeler, the kind with the blades parallel to the handle.

    It depends on what I am peeling.
