It seemed like everyone in Vegas this weekend was here for Casual Friday... seriously, even in the nice restaurants, it seemed that people were wearing sport shirts or polos and slacks at the dressiest, I saw a couple people wearing suits, and they didn't seem to be too well tailored.

I'll post some pics tommorow.

We went to Mon Ami Gabi for dinner on Sunday, and Prime tonight.

Mon Ami Gabi:

Nice view of the strip, food was fairly good, I had the filet, and my gf had the herb encrusted salmon, and we shared sea scallops parmesan and a creme brulee. Both were quite good, the salmon was flavorful, and the filet was nice and tender, the sea scallops were flavorful, and the creme brulee was fairly good, seemed to be not as sweet as I would have expected however. However, the service was mediocre, the servers failed to remove utensils at inconvenient times, were not particularly attentive, and worst of all, presented me with the check without being queued. I think the food was good to very good, but the service needed improvement. About $80 for two people w/o wine, a bit pricey.

Prime:

Spectacular view, nicely appointed, and the food and service were both top notch. I had the filet and my gf had rack of lamb, with a seared foie gras appetizer we had a nice window table with a great view of the "lake" There seemed to be an entire brigade of servers helping us, and they were attentive without being annoying. Whenever our glass was half full it was filled and the server seemed to appear as if magically just when needed. The steak was quite good, nice crispy crust and extremely flavorful for the filet, while tender. One of the better filet mignons I've had, probably the third best I've had in a restaurant (after Peter Luger's and Randall's in Vail). The lamb was flavorful without being gamey and tender.

They moved us out onto the patio for dessert and drinks, and there was a spectacular view of the lagoon. We shared a flourless chocolate cake with ice cream, espressos, and I had a nice glass of blue label. Overall, a spectacular meal in a great setting, damage was about $160 which was reasonable considering the quality of the food and service.

Didn't seem to be too many good shopping deals in Vegas, I picked up a pair of Purple Label linen pants at Last Call in Primm for $14 and there were some good deals at Williams Sonoma but really nothing in Vegas, the RL store in Caesars has a giant amount of Purple label on 50% off clearance, but they won't honor the 30% FALLEVENT coupon and 50% off on some of their items is really not that cheap (there were a really nice pair of pinstriped wool slacks but they were $225 even after the discount, a bit pricey considering ebay.

Isn't it always "Casual Friday" in Vegas? Especially during the summer.

Well, you figure at a place like Prime that's dress code states "Elegant Attire required: Jackets recommended" that sportshirts and khakis don't really count as elegant.

drizzt--

Yes, it's a pleasure to hear about your visit to Prime.   Everybody there--staff, customers--is always in a good mood.  Stuck as it is between Picasso and Le Cirque, Prime doesn't get the credit it deserves.  As it is, getting a table at a civilized hour in season can be difficult.

I have to admit to eavesdropping one night at the bar when somebody ordered a glass of Opus One.  Ninety-eight bucks. At Harrah's you used to get to take the glass home.  For this kind of money, you should get the maitresse d'.

Did you get up to Keller's palce at the Venetian (Bouchon)?  Or Lutece?

Next time you visit Mon Ami Gabi, try sitting inside--not in the overheated room next to the terrace, but in the first or second room from the bar.  I've found it quieter than outside, and the service is better.  BTW, not every bistro in Las Vegas can boast properly chilled Meursault or Montrachet.  The sad thing is that Mon Ami no longer serves Little Neck clams (with mignonette sauce).  What a loss.

And did you say "pictures"?  'D love to see 'em.

Regards,

Mike

yeah, we were in the room with the bar not quite on the terrace, it had a nice view, but was a bit loud. Perhaps it would have been better a bit further inside.

Personally I think I prefer Prime to Le Cirque/Picasso, while they are all great restaurants, I like the feel of it, and prefer steakhouses.

I think next time I'd like to try Bradley Ogden in the Caesars, and the place in the Venetian as well.

I like a good steak house too, but the damage is sometimes exorbitant. Including appetizers, wine, desert, coffee or cognac, and tip, the cost per couple easily tops $200 at a place like Prime. Nice, but prime. Only sushi specialists can get you for more. Well, at least at a steakhouse, you can be assured of leaving with a full stomach.

Bradley Ogden is more or less the only top restaurant in Vegas I haven't been to yet - I look forward to hearing someone's trip report.

On a more forum-related topic, did you have a chance to check out Fashion Show Mall? Without a doubt one of the more impressive traditional-style malls I've seen.

Yes, I've been to Fashion Show Mall, it's pretty nice, although I am a bit spoiled living 5 minutes from South Coast Plaza... I think I like the forum shops at Caesars a bit more, and SCP is significantly better than Fashion Show. My favorite place to shop in Vegas (or near vegas) is the Primm outlets.

I did buy some nice bally shoes at Fashion Show last time I was there, some lambskin laceups for about $180 (retail $379)

I like the Fashion Show mall too. The buyers at the Sak's Fifth Avenue seem very good. But I agree, nothing tops South Coast Plaza.

I went to Prime a few years ago, and was a bit disappointed on the quality of their filet. Delmonico's in the Venetian is much, much better. The thing is so tender you can cut it with your fork.

Good call on Peter Luger's though. I was just there on Friday and probably had the steak of my life. We ended up walking across the Williamsburg bridge back in to town to work that sucker off. Ended up topping the night off with dessert at Katz (full pastrami) at around 2am. Best pastrami I've ever had, but over a pound of it is a bit much after your stomach is already full of steak.

Hmm, I've been to delmonicos a few times, and it is good, but I think the steak at prime was quite a bit better, I assume you got the steak medium rare or rare?

I think the sauces at Prime were quite impressive as well.

In terms of actual quality of meat, there haven't been too many restaurant steaks that I like better than just self-grilled omaha steaks, still working on the seasonings to make it just right though.

i've had delmonico's many times. i usually stick with the ribeye medium rare now, but i've had the filet a few times rare.

perhaps i just had a single bad experience at prime since i've only been there once. on another note, i went to jean-georges (he owns prime) place in new york last week and even saw the man himself cooking for lunch. i guess the man takes pride in his restaurant. amazing meal.

i've never tried omaha steaks... haven't cooked much since i moved into this tiny apartment and lost my grill. any idea if they still taste good pan-seared and finished off in the oven?
