Only on SF would Vass come to mind more readily than Bass.

These look like something 12 year old kids have to wear when their parents make them dress up. Why are they so seemingly popular among adult forumites?

It's a classic penny loafer (although I prefer my Alden leisure handsewns and my Allen Edmonds Camerons, both in terms of looks and quality). IMHO, it's a timeless style. That said, I guess you either like it or you don't. I could say the same thing about some of the sleek, pointy toed shoes that are so seemingly popular among adult forumites (some models of Santoni, Berluti, etc.). Every time I see a picture of them, I always think (to parapharse A Christmas Story), "you'll put your eye out."

Different strokes, is all.

P.S. Vass does make a similarly styled penny loafer (A Harris can correct me, but I think it's on the Peter last). Someday, I'd love to pick one up in shell cordovan. The construction is undoubtedly superlative.

I remember Weejuns from HS 20 years ago. Leather like cardboard. I hate them still.

Thankfully when I was 12 my mother bought me brown suede Oxfords and a long sleeved shirt for dressing up a bit when needed... I think I was ahead of most of the kids my age.

The weejun is an essential shoe if you're going for that vintage "ivy" look. They can look really stodgy but on the right wearer, the penny loafer looks smashing. I like the Leavitt loafer, very smart.

In the new catalogue there are 3 different models on the Classic lasts of VASS:

Budapest, Peter and New Peter. 3636 last should be possible, too

Are Vass, or Bass, better to wear wet?

As once I posted here, last year ( found searching for Weejuns), a website of those who prefer the shoe worn wet.

Exactly, z. I think I wore them to church when I was, like, 9 years old.

You don't have to eat ramen noodles for a month to afford them.

The local Nordstrom Rack has a bunch of them, and if they're on the shelf upside-down they can fool you into thinking you've found a good shoe. But when you pick it up and turn it over the plasticky corrected grain gloss will turn your stomach.
