I am in the market for a new pair of shoes and already have Grenson's, C&J's, Ferragamo, Trickers and Alden's. Looking to try something new, but would not like to throw down anything more than $1K (i.e. no JL Paris).

Never really liked EG's designs (at least the one's at Saks). Between Vass and JMW, which one do people prefer? - Vass is, of course, $200 more expensive as well.

FYI, I'm looking at a wholecut.

Thanks,

Panzer

Does Vass even make a wholecut?  More bang for you buck with Vass.  U-last is a pretty "sexy" if that is the word; not at all similar to anything I've seen at Weston.  I like the P2 last best, I think.  I'm not a fan of the Lazlo last though.

If you find a style you like in Vass, I can attest to their supreme comfort and quality.  Weston seems a bit ordinary to me.

EDIT:

I like Weston, and I think they have some great styles. When I say, "ordinary," I mean that they don't strike me as anything better than what you'd find from Grenson or C & J. They aren't quite Ed Greens, and they don't have that "something special" that Vass does.

Do a Green special order.  They're very flexible and even with trees you can come in under 1K.  Some of their lasts and designs are a lot cooler than the fairly low key styles at Saks.  Additionally, you get a large selection of colors and leathers, and Tony is great to deal with. Besides, they do NY visits. And they can sometimes make tweaks for peculiarities in your foot.

I recently took delivery of Green wholecuts in Acorn Antique... very cool. I don't have pictures here but can try uploading them if I ever get home this week. Or if AlanC still has them...

That's an interesting option - I will definitely look into this. Thanks RJMan.

You can find pictures of cool Green wholecuts at several spots on the Net. www.edjones1192.com has several fantastic examples of Newbury wholecut special orders. Note that you can even specify the number of eyelets.

No question, Vass makes a significantly better shoe. Given the work that Vass has been doing recently for Ugolini and their Japanese retailers, it seems likely that they have a wholecut pattern somewhere in their repertoire. Still, you'd probably have to do a special order, either here or in Budapest.

Berluti is available at Barney's, and I have read that they're opening a store in Manhattan this spring.

I don't think that anyplace in NYC carries Corthay or Trickers.

Berluti's sold at Barney's and will be opening a store in Manhattan sometime this year. I very much doubt you will get Corthay in this country, although marc grayson had some tale of trying to meet him in Long Island for a bespoke visit. Tricker's I honestly don't know of a single retailer in the US. Try emailing them.

Grayson's problem was that Corthay was on Long Island (the Hamptons, maybe?) and refused to come into the city to meet him. The nerve of not being at his beck and call.

Very nice RJMan. What last did you use? 888? I have a balmoral boot with the same sole configuration on order. Can't wait.

"Shannon with no perforations" is how I described it. Not sure if they have real model name for a plain cap-toe bal boot.

Well, this isn't to make the thread about me -- I just wanted to post them to give our friend Panzer an example of what a Green special order could do. I went with the 888 last and asked for no broguing, 4 instead of 5 eyelets, toe steel, bevelling... Another good choice of last might be the 82 (I think) last used at Foster & Son for their RTW -- very shapely. Christ, I'm calling a shoe last shapely. G-d help me.
