I'm considering the Vass Wholecut Medallion shoe in black (P2 Last) and was wondering if anyone could give me a price estimate (A. Harris?)?

    Thanks,

    Panzer

Sky Valet in Washington, DC, charges $695 for non-U-last shoes that they have in stock; $795 if they are not in stock and have to be ordered. Phone # is 202-337-4333.
Very nice guys who will not jerk you around and I'd think would be happy to ship shoes to you.

I paid $695 for a pair of U-last shoes Sky Valet had in stock.  I believe that the price for non-U-last shoes in stock is $650.

At the risk of provoking essays from people who really know, special order in this context means standard size/style (non-bespoke), choose your material?

P2's aren't costing the same as the u-last?? Vass charges U last prices for them, or at least they did... I'll have to check on that.

Special order means your choice of model/last/leather/sole etc. which means a whole lot of possible combos..

Please forgive my ignorance in matters related to Vass, but what is it about the U-last that makes it substantially more expensive than Vass' other offerings? I don't know of any other shoe manufacturer that raises the price considerably for one last as compared to others. Seems peculiar.

Andrew, the only other possible explanation for Sky Valet's pricing is that perhaps they don't have any P2's "in stock." But, their price list of Vass shoes does not indicate a special price for P2 last that I recall.

The beveled waist and higher polish take more time/effort to produce. I would guess that particular shape is harder to last as well. And then there are the three-piece shoe trees...

All U last shoes that I've seen have had bevelled waists, as have most (but not all) P2 last shoes that I've seen. Waist bevelling is more labor-intensive than regular waists, hence the added cost.

I'm heading to Montreal this spring and wondered whether Vass is available anywhere up there. Otherwise I think I may try out Lobb at L'Uomo.

Here's a question: could you get U last shoes made without the bevelled waist? I don't know why you would want to do that, but could you?

I must say that my experience with these guys has not been entirely positive. For example, back in November, I placed a special order for a pair of Vass shoes made on the Budapest last in my size. Three months later, I'm still waiting for these... with not one word from these guys as to when I can expect to get my shoes. Anyone have any idea as to how long it takes for Vass to process these special orders?

There are no Canadian Vass retailers as far as I know. L'Uomo's got a good selection of Lobb and EG, but be forewarned that you won't find any bargains... The Canadian dollar continues to do well vis-a-vis the US so don't expect much help on the exchange rate.

A Harris, if you're reading, Holt Renfrew will be dropping its current shoe retailer (Browns shoes) by 2007 and replacing the current crop of Prada and Tods with "international luxury brands". I would expect that with their relationship with Hermes they'll be stocking Lobb at some point, but there may be an opportunity there for you... Their HQ is in Toronto.

I placed an order with Vass in Budapest, I was told five weeks and it was ready as promised. No problems whatsoever.

The delay might not be at the Hungarian side. You'd better check with Sky Valet.
