Some guys get lipstick on their collar when they fool around. I got a smear of varnish from a new violin.

Anything to be done apart from a lukewarm soak and a trip to the laundry?

I would scrub the stain with a brush, a fingernail or tooth brush. Use soap and warm water. In my experience, this gets anything out.

Thanks. Luckily, it didn't run too deep. Water, scraping with fingernails, and an insurance spritz of "Shout" or some such seem to have done the job. We'll see how it comes back.

Violin-right. You were laying a quick topsides coat before putting her away for the winter weren't you

If the varnish hasn't set, I've had good luck with turpentine.
