The black has a split in the middle, two pieces of leather.

IMO key to modernizing the fit is not just making it slimmer but making the body and arms longer. You can see it pretty clearly in the Junya photo above.

How much slimmer should we go compared to a standard fit...that's the question at hand...

Below is a nice, standard Vanson fit...

Yes, though without the belt, it may looks off. The picture also shows the model doesn't fit the shoulder width, so it's probably not that slim.

Actually, usually, you make the arm shorter and the body longer, to accommodate civilian use. I had that done to my Aero. On riding jackets, arms are long and bodies are short, for the obvious reasons. In any case, body and sleeve length can be adjusted for individual jackets.

Keep in mind that we can get a more tailored / slimmer fit with a split back...

I'm a size 36 at most, while the guy has an awful haircut his jacket def looks good but scaling to my size isn't so good for many brands. Brands like Junya, Dior Homme or even Margiela basically make sample for a 38/48 and take a lot of care of their 36/46 so I'm usually good. Nice rider companies like Vanson, not so much. I like the idea of getting something more traditional in theory but in practice I tend to look at fashion pieces 99% of the time. I recently had luck with a Buzz Rickson X William Gibson MA-1 but then I was specifically looking to avoid a fashion MA-1 look.

would like to avoid split back...

so far from the baseline pic below, here is what we have:
    no belt or belt loops
    change pocket gone
    longer jacket
    shorter sleeves (can be adjusted)
possibly one piece back with kidney panel

In our draft, we also moved the sleeve pocket to the bicep, and put in side adjusters.

You'll see, but not exactly like that. One of the Junya versions had it, and it looked awesome.

    Probably in a few days.
