Hober is my personal preference. I also have a Chipp burgundy that I like. If it was up to me, I'd buy two Hobers, one navy and one burgundy, and go from there.

As far as I know, Tie Bar does not have a real grenadine and their grenafaux is no substitute for a grenadine tie (I used to have them and donated all of them). I'd sooner look in our classifieds for a used Hober, Drake's, etc.

I don't know anything about Tyrwhitt ties but I think their grenadines are priced similar to Hober, and I'd rather go with Hober than the unknown quantity in Tyrwhitt.

I’ve had Hober and Chipp. It’s Hober by a decent margin. The silk is probably the same and both give you custom dimensions flexibility. But the difference is in the interlining, I think. Hober’s has much better drape and ties a better knot.

I agree generally that there isn’t a huge difference in tie manufacturers/construction, but I think that’s only true once you break the $100 threshold. Below that, ties are probably going to be somewhat inferior. Don’t listen to anyone tell you tie bar ties are the same as a Hober or a Vanda.

Separately I have found black grenadine to be very useful— mainly with navy and brown/tobacco suits, both with white shirts.

Thanks for the inputs guys. Sounds like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go with Hober. Funny, though, that they don't list their widths on their store. I guess they're 3.5?

You pick length and width. It’s totally custom.

Hober is the best value in grenadine. You are choosing correctly.

You put it in order notes.

Come on man read the instructions.

Yeah makes sense they would take all of the customers inputs on the product page but wait until the final checkout page notes section for width. I should have checked the instructions! I know it sounds crazy but I was interested in knowing the width before adding it to my cart. Come on man.

Well now you know. Come back and report on your ties once you receive them. My Hobers still spark joy every time I wear them.

Oh one more tip. If you get a navy get the “dark navy” in prometeo or whatever the smaller weave is. The regular navy is actually more indigo IME.

You can order swatches through the website if you're unsure.

I got rid of my Chipp grenadines as I couldn’t get a good knot out of them. Traded up for Shibumi Firenze. I have a few EG Capelli and Paul Stuart grenadines as well. Nice stuff.

If you had no grenadine ties, would you choose grossa or fina? What about color choices if you were buying 3-4? Was thinking burgundy, chocolate/brown, navy, and some shade of green (forest, olive, sage) plus ???? as a fourth?

Personally, I’d choose fina. I have both but prefer the look of the fina. Your 3-4 color choices are sensible. If I was starting over, it would be burgundy, navy, chocolate brown, and a forest green. I also have a purple/black that I love and is surprisingly distinct from my burgundy. Silver is also worth thinking about.
