There is very little solid information in past threads on Valentino, and what there is seems a few years old.

I was browsing today and was really pleasantly surprised - some very nice pieces that if they had been in my size I would probably have purchased. The original retail price seems highly ambitious for the quality but at a fair discount it seems reasonable. They were certainly a cut above the typical Italian designer product - some clever styling & elegant proportions.

I was particularly taken by an unlined, grey flannel chalkstripe patch pocket blazer with minimal padding and with hefty solid plain brass buttons. Sounds horrendous but was actually quite lovely.

Anyway, a thread for any experiences, thoughts, comments and insights into Valentino clothes. I'm thinking mainly about the main line, though there must be diffusion lines too.

Yeah there are a bunch of lines from his collection line to Uomo to Roma et cetera. The stuff I have seen has been very nice fabric, but fussed. Still drapes very well and is quite flattering. His suits tend to have some very nice details, such as special buttons or interesting finishes. Its some good stuff, but I wouldnt buy it unless it was at least 50% off.

I can get it for a bit more off than that, and at that level it seemed a good buy, if you can get it in a style you like.

I see what you mean about "fussed", but I didn't think it was overdone fuss in the way, say, D&G or Versace can be.

The unlined patch pocket blazer I mentioned was labelled "Tailoring" or something along those lines. It was very soft with minimal padding, so that would fit in with a maker like Isaia I guess, who can do that. I couldn't find a proper tag in it though.

There was this metallic finished jacket with these fantastic silver buttons that bloomies was selling 2 or 3 years ago. I think it was like 1300. Let me know if you find it

Yes, that "Tailoring" or whatever it's called--I forget--is made by Isaia. Very nice stuff. I tried--and failed--to sell one or two here. I've seen a few nice pieces from the other lines that I would consider, if the price was right.

This made me think of some Versace Collection suits I saw a while back. I am pretty certain they were made by Zegna. Maybe to something like the Z Zegna level, but decent stuff.

^ I think there's a bit of the unknown with Valentino - people don't seem to own much of it here, so that may have been why you had trouble selling it here. That gap in my own knowledge was partly why I posted this thread.

Seriously, if you've got a pic of it, I'll keep an eye out next time I go (probably a couple of weeks or so time). There were a few metallic jackets there. Remind me of your size too. Price would probably be about 60-65% off retail. Anyway, won't say more in here as I don't want this thread moved to the B&S forum!

haha, I dont have a pic, but its was kind of a navy with a nice sheen to it. The buttons were metal silver with black in the center I believe. Notch lapels I think... I believe I was a 52 when I tried it on.

Does anyone know who makes the regular mainline Valentino suits (not the tailoring range by Isaia) ?

Since even the Roma diffusion line is pretty good, halfcanvassed and good fabrics - the regular mainline must be atleast as good

Valentino Roma is made by... Valentino (Valentin SPA). I know because we have tons of them (and for cheap too!). They're owned by Marzotto.

How is the quality of the construction on the Valentino Roma suits? I have one Valentino suit that I bought at Barneys on sale last summer that I really like, although the leg opening at the bottom seems a little narrow--on a lace-up oxford they have a bit of a tendency to catch on the laces instead of laying over them, so I tend to end up wearing derbies or monk straps with them. Are the Valentino Roma suits you have like that as well?

Hello,

Yes, the trousers tend to be slimmer, but check our website for actual measurements according to your size. Feel free to PM me for more specific questions.
