My gf and I are both finishing undergrad this semester and will be moving in together this summer. Would it be a bad idea to get her some nice dinnerware for the new place? We both cook a lot and I think this would be a great addition to our new apartment.

This is only a good idea if:

    1. You've agreed on it beforehand, AND
    2. You still get her something anyway.

    Trust me on this.

Agreed on what beforehand? Still get her what anyway? That was what I was going to get her. Is that bad?

I make dinner, we have a favorite wine, I get her a sappy card and play my guitar and sing her a song. Much better than going out for an awful, over priced dinner. Plus, she LOVES it. Easy to please. I'm lucky.

Practical gifts are not Valentines gifts. If you've agreed beforehand that you need dishes for the apartment, then fine. You still need to get her flowers or something. This is the classic "he got me a blender and looked at me like he'd just given me the Hope Diamond" mistake. Think of what she's going to tell her girlfriends. If you know she's going to go crazy for them, fine I guess. Just be sure to hedge your bet with some flowers or something. EDIT: On the other hand, I'm old and divorced, so what do I know.

Good advice. She's told me I am not allowed to give her anymore jewelry until it's a ring. I've given her quite a few nice pieces and she's to the point where she has to decided which of my gifts to wear. Another problem is that our 1 year anniversary is like the same fucking week. I plan to send flowers to her work on that day as I feel it's more important. The proximity of these two dates fucken sucks.

I'm building my GF a desk in African Mahogany (not for valentines day) so I'm having a picture of the two of us made and putting it in a sterling silver/hardwood frame by Ralph Lauren that I've had engraved.

The desk should be finished next month so I couldn't really use it as the only gift.

Good to see you haven't fell into this commercialized celebrated day yet.
Flowers get jacked up in price by like 3 fold just because it's Valentine.

Having said that, cooking for my lady has always been a success.
Pair that with a nice bottle of wine.

...And both of you end up with a good night [IMG]

I got the usual card and candy a few weeks ago and gave her roses last night. With the weather we're having, I wasn't taking chances.
