looking to pick up a couple v neck sweaters for fall/winter and wondering if MC can offer some guidance?

historically stuck with basic merino, but dabbled in cashmere last year with some j crew sweaters after I'd heard they sourced their cashmere from loro piana...hand was nice, but construction was mediocre--one of the two I bought started to come apart at the pits. pilling wasn't atrocious on the one I ended up keeping, but feels like I should be able to do better for the ~$150 I paid on sale.

interested in taking a next step up in terms of quality, but not quite ready to spring for loro piana stuff.

recs for good quality merino and cashmere v neck sweaters in the ~$250 range for cashmere and less for merino?

I've had good luck with Zegna mainline knitwear. The stuff I have (both cashmere and merino) has held up very well over the years. Also easier to find on sale than LP.

Can't help you there - I bought my stuff in person several years ago. Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf, etc. carry their stuff, although at full retail it's in the same territory as LP.
