I would second the Miata. That or a decent late model Porsche 944. the 4 cyl porsches are not too expensive to run and are relatively reliable. I wouldn't use it as my daily driver but I am seriously considering one for a weekend warrior.

A Porsche with a good service historywould be a great choice, IMO. Running cost wouldn't always be cheap, but it would probably be less than what you'd expect especially if you are a do-it-yourselfer or have a good indy shop nearby.

Ditto on the Porsche 944. Has a roof, room for the very occasional back seat rider, and it is pretty reliable as far as a weekender. $4,000 buys you something decent.

    What about a motorcycle?

Otherwise, get a Miata and ignore the questions about your mid-life crisis.

XJS V12 Jag convertible, 1990ish or so should be about 3-4K, put $50-100 aside every week for the eventual repairs but if you are only using it on the weekend, even the jag can last you a few years.
looking for smaller than a v12. already have a v8. but thanks.
    Love mine. [IMG]

4 grand really won't get you much. For that I would have to say get a miata as well. A honda CRX is a really fun car to consider. 4 grand will get you a fun rock crawler. Also a nice bike. Sports car you really are gonna have to spend a bit more.

Take the four grand and wait. Options - however bad they still are - open up at around $12k and up. Plus, isn't insurance going to dry you up in three years?

The Saab 9-3 hatch is a quick and sporty car - great for weekends. They can be had for the $4k and under price-range as well. Here is a 9-3 Viggen (sportier model, like the current Aero models) that went for $3,500 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-...item4a9d38076d

    Love mine.

Same here. Every drive is special, and so often I'll turn off the music and just listen to the sweet "whine" of the V12 engine. [IMG]
