Buying a Hat. GQ apparently has a decent layout in their issue this month on hats but I think it falls short in explaining some of their tips. Has anyone else read it yet? Thoughts? (this thread is not for you anti-hat people)

The porkpie seems to be all the rage among hipsters nowadays.

I can appreciate someone under 50 who wears: french cuffs, silk pocketsquares, braces and or side-tabs, antique eyeframes, elegant and elongating shoes a proper overcoat, and a fine watch to enhance their appearance -

-BUT a hat is *too* much for me; it turns it all into a costume in this day-and-age I feel - too affected.

I definatly agree. Mainly because i do all of the aforementioned things besides the braces and the hat. A hat really is pushing it and is too bold for my tastes.

One of the few advantages of being over 50 is that you can wear anything you want (other than fur) that's well and beautifully made and people don't call you (or look at you like) a prat. One of the many advantages of living and working in San Francisco is that Willie Brown popularized, to a small degree, hats. I have a wonderful Panama that I wear often on hot sunny days, and an elegant charcoal fedora that I wear occasionally. Both made by this excellent artisan. http://www.paulshatworks.com/ When I need protection from heavy rain I wear one of these:

I love wearing hats and picked up a really cool derby in Baltimore in 2002 that gets compliments whenever I wear it. Other than that, I usually wear a Kangol Ivy cap with the bill to the back which is how I've been wearing them for years so I'm not about to change.

Saying that, I can't wait for the hipsters to move on to some other clothing fad since I really dislike their skinny brim hats worn with anything they decide to pick up off their floor. I haven't worn my derby much lately for fear of being mistaken for one of them.

I'd love to find a silk top hat somewhere but my big 7-5/8" head is making that difficult.

There's going to be a special edition of the (badly named) Stetson Nostalgia sold through Bencraft Hatters. It should be one of the better styled hats that Stetson has done in some time. Anyone interested in a classic hat should look into it.

also, it's worth mentioning that a continuous lean (along with selectism and h(y)r collective) is the best blog going.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
