I went to the Melchior store and its more casual, though i did buy a sports jacket there. definitely slim fit

however i wouldnt buy one of their suits, but seems good value for the price. good material but not great tailoring

I went to Colette today - what a screwed up place that is! Two levels of overpriced weird crap!

Carmina shoes were really nice - but 350EURO is US$500 for a pair of shoes .. can I get similar quality in New York??

Not at that price. They were significantly more expensive when they were being sold in NY.

Thanks - but if you had a choice between a calf pair of Carmina dress shoes vs. Alden cordovan dress shoes, which would be a the preferred choice?

Mine (for dress shoes) would be Carmina, but of course this is a matter of personal taste rather than money, or money rather than taste if that is the most important factor.
In other words, don't try to get a compromise you'll regret

For "good value" see my post form "Ask Andy" last year:

You might wish to try these shops for well-priced semi
trad menswear. I own several pairs of their dress slacks,
the oldest of which is from the early 80s.
They are superbly made and have worn extremely well.
I haven't been to paris since 2000 , but the last time
I checked, the stores carried the same style and quality.

Arthur et Fox
159 Blvd. St Germain
75006 Paris

Arthur et Fox
44 Rue du Bac
75007 Paris

There's another branch near the Opera.
Also, as I recall, at least several years back,
they owned another store near Ave. Foch
but with a different name

Weston shoes are another good bet.

Have a great visit.

Arthur & Fox is still there and worth a visit (the closest branch to Opera is where rue Vignon meets rue Tronchet). Good for suits and casual jackets (made by Boglioli for Arthur & Fox). Friendly staff too. Unfortunately this is something of a dead period for some traditional menswear shops in Paris: The sales have just finished and summer stock won't be on the shelves before March. You might get discounts on what remains of the A/W stock if you ask though.

Also try Cairns up by Parc de Monceau, 104 Boulevard Courcelles. Incotex, PT-01, Sartoria Napoli (?), Barba, Aspesi, Boglioli (Boglioli is quite big in Paris) etc. Again, no summer stock until March but you might find some remaining bargains.

Victoire Paris Homme is good for colorful Italian-style casualwear... branches near Palais Royal and Le Bon MarchÃ

are best.

Slowear is worth a visit (Incotex, Zanone, Montedoro, Glanshirt) in the arcade at 25 rue Royal (close to la Madeleine)
