My wife and I will be driving to NYC to see family this summer. We've been holding off shopping for clothes for a while thinking that there must be some places between Buffalo and Manhattan to do some bargain shopping. The $CAN is strong, and my wardrobe is just about empty so I need everything- suits, shirts, shoes, even a winter coat.

Any recommended stops?

PS, my wife needs clothes too.

If you like Lands' End stuff, try their Inlet store in Rochester. It's in the Marketplace Mall just north of the Thruway on I390.

Is there a Hickey Freeman outlet in Rochester? Kinda out of the between Buffalo and New York (fastest way is via 81 and 80 through PA) but I would second Woodbury Commons.

Woodbury is close enough to be on the agenda. So are Waterloo, Niagara Falls, Walden Galleria. I think Woodbury is HF's only New York outlet.

Depending on what you consider upstate, Glens Falls has a bunch of Outlet shops. Polo, BR, JCrew etc...

The Hickey Freeman factory store is in Rochester.

I'd didn't find much at Waterloo Outlets last time I went. There was a Brooks Brothers outlet and a Polo outlet, but it was mostly made-for-outlet merchandise (as opposed to returns/end of season/etc. from the main store).

for example, brooks brothers 346 is a line only found at their outlets. generally lower quality than items from their regular stores.

Thanks for this info dave/bobbers. A quick web search on this topic turns up interesting reading about marketing on outlets like this.
I live downtown and don't have much experience with them. Are there better strategies?

Re: Waterloo, if you're going to be passing by and aren't pressed for time it's at least worth a stop. Your wife may find something at the other outlets there.

A Saks Off Fifth is rumored to be opening in Syracuse, but that might not be for a while.

Woodbury is generally worth a look. Look at a map of the outlets and try to have a clear strategy of the stores you want to hit and in what order.

The HF outlet in Rochester often has a very large selection but the prices will be the same as their outlet at Woodbury Common.
