Three flights booked today--Portugal for Thanksgiving, Budapest the second weekend in December, and Naples the weekend after that. Most likely will add Paris from Wed-Sat 2 December. So aside from the obvious, what to see and do, where to stay? I'm looking for good arts and nightlife, mostly. And who drinks beer, you know, with other people? I'd love to meet up with any SFers who are free in Europe this fall. Of course I'll also be in Germany between all those trips, spending as much time as I can in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Heidelberg, and hopefully a pilgrimage out to St Sixtus in Belgium. I'll be sure to provide pictures every step of the way!

I'll keep my winter-2007 plans under wraps for now to avoid inspiring any more drool

Are you going to do the Trappiste beer tour in Belgium?

Yep, sort of, and great! Zach I'm going to be in Dusseldorf and Aachen starting either Friday or Saturday next week, for four days. A friend has a few French girls lined up for us, which can only end well. Let me know the best way to contact you in Germany and I'll give a call when I'm back.

Just going to make a day (or two) trip to St Sixtus, sample whatever they have on hand. I'm going to play hooky to do it, so can't make a big trip out of it. Have you been out there, Kent? It's going to be about a 4 hour drive, but from everything I read about their beer, it's incredibly worth the effort.

Matt, ditto on contact info in Italy. If you wouldn't mind there's no one I'd rather talk tailors with in Naples, maybe grab a pizza too.

Never been to Belgium but I certainly plan to. It is the Mecca of beer.

I vowed to not become a beer nerd -- unlike wine snobs, beer snobs are all fat white men.

Tom,

plan on having dinner with me on Friday - or late night pub crawl on Saturday. I am flying out on Sunday morning. I know the temples of beer in Dusseldorf better than any jew should.

You lucky bastard! Well, I guess not so much lucky. You certainly earned it. At any rate, enjoy, and congratulations.

If you can, try and sample the rabbit cooked in gueze. Divine...particularly in winter.

Yep, got back to Germany yesterday! It may not be a beer mecca, but the bar that's on the ground floor of my building has Guiness on tap so I was welcomed back appropriately...

Have a great time Tom, Budapest is an amazing city. Make sure you go to the bathes in Pest and check out Hero's Square. I would recommend the bar Simplex (or whatever the Hungarian word for "Simple" is) but I believe it's only open during the summer months. It's one of the coolest bars I've ever been to. It's an old unmarked warehouse and you enter in off an alleyway. Part of the structure is missing its roof so they put up tenting to shield it from rain. All of the furniture in the place looks like it was found at Salvation Army. Great DJ, cheap beer, hot stylish women, and good fooseball.

I will give you a good pizza place rec for Napoli but I'll have to look it up first.
