Unwanted gifts... What should I do?

People always give me ties for gifts. Now I love ties, but when people give me ugly polyester ties for christmas I get really hateful inside.

This tie still has the barcode on, so I am tempted to exchange it for something else. The design of the tie, isnt bad, so I will probably exchange it for a tie with a very similar colour and pattern but in silk.

I will never wear the ties... so does that make me a terrible person?

Exchange away. Unless the tie was a gift from your child. In that case, yes, you are a terrible person.

I have the same problem when people know that I'm a cigar smoker. Usually I just say thanks and put it in my pocket. I hate being put on the spot and they actually want me to smoke that crap in front of them. It ruins my palate for the night. It usually happens when someone buys bogus cubans. They're well meanng but it ruins my night.

Return the tie. You're not evil.

Not wearing a gifted tie doesn't make you a terrible person, though if the gifter is close to you, I would say it would be very gracious of you to give them one good wearing of the tie.

Publicly declaring "when people give me ugly polyester ties for christmas I get really hateful inside" does knock you into boorish behavior.

Hateful?

If you have a hunch that certain ppl. will give you an ugly tie for a gift, why not try to head them off at the pass? Maybe get into a discussion with them about clothing before they buy and give some subtle hints. It would take some work to bring the subject up and not make it look like you are steering them, but it could be done.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread:

What if you got a gift from a place like Aeropostale from a friend who doesn't realize you dress differently from most people your age (I'm 26). I got a polo shirt. And I don't care for it much. The problem is, the policy is that if I return it with a gift receipt, I can only get store credit. I really don't want anything else from this crappy establishment. What is there to do?

I'm thinking about learning to sew and I'm thinking of getting a long sleeve shirt to take apart for pattern. But the other problem is that Imight run into my friend and she may find it odd that she never sees me in it.

It's a valid fear. I hope whatever you do, the person does not find out about what you do unless the friend is truly close enough to handle the truth.

I just looked at their website. You could return the polo shirt and get a plain white or blue one instead - if the logo bothers you, you could just wear it under a sweater.
The alternative would be to just wear it once in front of her eyes

Where do you find polyester ties from? Even the $5 ones on the street claim to be silk! You must have some cheap ass friends!
