Unsightly Bulge - Pocket Squares

Do any of you have problems with the bulge that is created in the pocket from a pocket square?

Am I doing a bad job of folding? Should I press the square to reduce the bulk?

I've definitely experienced a similar problem -- more often with cotton and linen squares than with silk ones. I'd be interested to hear any other potential solutions, as I'd hate to press the square; I like to ruff it up a bit to pretend I've got sprezzatura

Gentlemen, measure your squares. For cotton/linen, if you do not want a bulge, you need to go no more than 12 inches square, 14 inches will give you a slight bulge (I wear 14's but it does not bother me), 16 inches in cotton/linen will give you a big bulge (maybe use these in another part of your wardbrobe

). Also, a puffed square (where the corners stick out of the pocket) will give you more bulge than a "square" square. I like the puffed squares and I simply fold and iron the bottom part of the square that goes in the pocket first.

I don't have a bulge problem with my cotton or linen squares, but I do with some of my larger silken squares, especially in my one blazer with patch pockets. I think an upper patch pocket tends to exaggerate the bulge. However, I think the square itself draws the viewer's eye away from the bulge and toward the exposed portion so much that I doubt if it as too much of an aesthetic problem.

I can hear it now . . . "I was going to wear a pocket square, but I decided to roll commando." BTW: Ironing helped a lot.

Maybe it`s buldging so much because you guys are too shy to bring the square out of the pocket.

Seriously though, no matter what you do, the pocket will not lay completely flat when you`re wearing a square.

I like squares that are 8-10" on a side precisely due to this issue.
