With over 30 suits in my wardrobe, worn over a decade, I have come to the conclusion of really preferring my pants unlined.

The feel of the lovely fabric against my thigh, the way it "sits" and holds together (doesn't bunch) and the natural "hang" seems far more advantageous than lined pants.

I find lined pants bulky and really hate the thick linings in my Brioni suits - on the other hand my Gianni versace suits are all unlined and fit and feel beautifully.

I don't think sweat 9after all the unlined pant seems to breathe better) or longevity comes into it as my unlined pants have lasted as long at lined pants.

So what is the real reasoning behind lined pants? Interested in people's comments...

I can think of one instance where pant lining is critical.  The lining of lightweight summer pants is essential for making them opaque and keeping pockets and underwear out of view.

Traditional English trousers, even in the scratchiest tweed, are never front-lined. It might be necessary for the very fine fabrics Italians are so fond of, to give them a bit more body.

Many modern ready-to-wear suits have the lining attached to go over the trouser pockets. (Even Zegna does that, shock, horror.) That is a very lazy way of doing things, as it saves finishing the pockets neatly. As a result the thin lining fabric will wear very quickly in the pocket area. The proper way is outer fabric, lining, and pockets: so the heavy pocket material will rub against your leg and not the flimsy lining fabric.

I recently moved to southern Vietnam and had a pair of unlined pants made for me. They seem to be cooler than the lined pants I brought with me, but this may be due to the fabric. I will definitely have more unlined pants made while I'm here.
