What would you say are Uniqlo's core competencies? In other words what pieces of clothing are they best at/specialize in? What would you buy from the store? Thanks in advance.

Last fall, I bought some cheap slim fit wool trousers and some merino wool cardigans. Both represented excellent value in my mind. $50/trouser and $40/sweater. Not the highest quality pieces, but they have all held up just fine.

Jeans (great fit, decent construction, great price) are probably their core competency.

Their website is absolutely rubbish. I finally got to visit the shop when I was in NYC in October. They had decent loOking wool and cashmere sweaters but everything else I saw looked cheap and tatty. Some chesterfield style overcoats which appeared slick on the website were IRL cheaply made of very shoddy material. I bought some socks!

My favorite stuff from Uniqlo are sweaters. I have two lambswool sweaters and one merino-cashmere and they look so good, for such a low price (I think I got them for 20 bucks and 10 bucks).

Knitwear and button down or OCBD shirts. Maybe jeans.

Also girls' clothing, which typically has a shorter life (I bought a lot of Christmas presents for my girlfriend there, and it was a WIN).

I have a lambswool sweater that I bought for $20 in early December when I forgot to pack a sweater for 3 weeks in NYC... I feel I had already got my money's worth by Christmas.

I buy all my underwear and t-shirts there. I'd buy my socks there too if my feet were smaller. Do they sell anything larger than 27cm (~9 US) in the NYC store?

All stuff is terrible and of throwaway quality with one exception - the heattech thermals. The fabric quality on all the shirts - with the exception of the chambray - is uniformly poor unless hard scratchy fabric that feels like thin plastic is your thing. Cotton pants are no more quality than GAP pants. Wool pants are slim cut but made with terrible scratchy fabrics, and since they are unlined you get the full terrible scratchy fabrics. All knitwear is crap. "High quality cotton" jumpers are actually acrylic/cotton blends, and see through to boot. Thickly knitted jumpers (cotton/acrylic or otherwise) pill within a few wears. The "Fine Merino" was the most durable they ever made, but it is no longer available - being replaced by a lower quality and higher priced Merino/Cashmere blend. Sizing is calibrated to small weeny Japanese, so on white people even if the body is sized right the arms are often short. Their stocking algorithms are poor, leading often to situations where every size is out except Ms or Ls. Finally, if you are stupid enough to purchase the +J stuff there at full price, you should be barred from ever reproducing by permanent means. It's a low-end cheep & cheerful chain in Japan (on par with Old Navy), but overseas it seems to be the shitz, because apparently the rest of the world hasn't yet discovered colour blocking, and hey - it's Japanese.

I went to check out their store to see what all the fuss is about. Most of the stuff seemed really crappy and the lines for the dressing room were too long to try on jeans.

I bought a pack of poot socks and a flannel shirt for lounging with the dogs for $12. I was not impressed with anything or with the confusion in the store. My girlfriend likes the scarf that she picked up but hates the socks.

Meh, won't be back.

There seems to have been a significant drop in quality in their latest season stuff, along with a concurrent increase in price. Disappointing - had previously bought a load from them, particularly the +J line. In the mainline, I quite liked the fine merino knitwear (somebody above said these had been discontinued, though), and the jeans are pretty good value (very cheap for ok quality and good range of fits).
