I had a shirt made out of bamboo (not sure if it was Acorn) and the cuffs and collar wore away very quickly. No problem with machine washing though.

Glenroyal is a bit soft and spongy. Nice for a light/medium-weight tweed sport jacket, but not the sort of thing that one normally thinks of for an overcoat.

Thanks again Concordia. On a related note, is 50% cashmere + 50% wool at a heavier weight (say 21oz) a good fabric for an overcoat? Will it hold up during the US northeast winters while keeping me warm?

Yup - the blend should be fine.

It depends on how cold it gets. I have a 20-24oz DB overcoat that is good until the teens or single digits (in Farenheit). Below that I breakout the shearling.

Yeah, ok. I think it's safe to say any wool overcoating will be lacking in single digit F weather. But, by and large, a 20oz. wool / cashmere blend will be fine for northeastern winters. If you're going for 100% wool, I would maybe go up to a 23-25oz. weight.

I wear a 20oz all wool overcoat in the winter and I'm fine. I generally wear it over 15-16oz suits though so I guess that makes a difference.

I am a rather short (5'8") and thin (145 lbs) man with a cervical spondylosis problem. So, I cannot wear a heavy overcoat. I think 20-21 oz, is the maximum I could do with probably a thick sweater inside.

Now, the question of styling: for a first (or only) overcoat, would the Chesterfield be a good choice?

I had to google cervical spondylosis. At first I thought it was a problem with your cervix.

When the doctor diagnosed me with it, I had to do the same :). I think I should've just said chronic neck pain.

Damn, those are nice. Standard book, or floor sweepings from a jobber?

    Beautiful colors

    Do those cloths
    have many years
    on their shoulders?

    Very vintage?
    I thirst for the answer
