The flannel looks so much richer, I am sure both cloth will made up well.

No. Gray sportcoats never work well.

+1. You could maybe wear that with a tan moleskin or a dark brown winter cotton, but as whnay said, its not a great color choice for a SC.

I think it's fine; just take the color that would otherwise be in the coat and wear it on your trousers in a solid color like burgundy, dark green, burnt orange, etc.

Apart from black and white herringbone, I'd say.

Gray donegals can work pretty well along with the herringbone Roger just mentioned. Other than those I'm pretty much in agreement.

Why doesn't a gray sportcoat with navy pants work like a navy sportcoat with gray pants work?

Grey sports coat can be fine with light brown pants, especially if you are blonde or blonde-brown, I think, but that cloth isn't perfect. The plaids should be larger, or better, the cloth should be a solid grey.

Perhaps we should step back and accept that there is no hard-and-fast rule on gray odd jackets. I think some folks categorically dislike light top/dark bottom, and that's what you're likely to end up with when you wear a gray odd jacket. You'll never persuade this bunch. Personally, I think there's no inherent problem there. gdl ably illustrates how to wear it. Of course, his moo shot probably works against his thesis...

In the case of brokencycle's fabric, my objection is that the colors seem spring-like, but it's a fall/winter fabric. Could be the photo, but that's my first reaction.

In my humble opinion gray odd jackets are perfectly fine as long as they're made of fabric that doesn't clearly look like suiting...
