Before, I would have happily worn plastic square toe Kenneth Cole shoes and aspired to a Hugo Boss suit.
Now, I'm ruined.
In asking for advice on what to wear to my buddy's wedding, I finally learned the difference between a Balmoral(oxford) and a Blucher and that the first is more formal than the second. Hours were spent reading about coordinating without being matchy matchy.
I bought Brooks Brothers navy linen suit for the wedding, and found a pair of black Allen Edmonds plain toe oxfords on Ebay only to be dismayed at the shiny plastic corrected grain leather finish. A white shirt with a fine blue plaid and a mid-blue tie rounded things out. I was properly attired for the wedding.
It was a sartorial train wreck.
I kept my styleforum opinions to myself except to mention to my friend that the bottom suit button does not traditionally get buttoned.
The day after the wedding, I spent a couple of hours at the mall in Costa Mesa visiting the John Lobb store, the Canali store, and spending 45 minutes at Brioni chatting with the salesman all while wearing one of their jackets. I'm not sure it's worth the off the rack price, but it didn't suck at all.
Found a Canali sport coat at The Rack for 85% off it's list price.
Oh yes, I'm ruined.
