I would of course suggest the 5EPxSF jean. At $210 with the discount, you really are not going to get any better in terms of denim, trims, or construction. Of course, fit and preference is a highly subjective matter. Having experience with all of the Japanese brands mentioned, I would say that the 5EP denim is significantly more complex than the denim used by any of Flathead, Samurai, and Eternal.

The KMW 1980 are very well made (I have a pair, and really like them). However, imo, they are a less versatile jean than the 5EPxSF. The lighter color makes them very casual and a little "cowboy".

yeesh. i guess its down to two choices. both have their own appeals.

Ande Whall Grifters
5EPxSF

What I like about the Grifters is the streaky denim, price, and the fact that its hand made. I hear the quality of the denim and construction is up there with the best. How would you compare this quality-wise with 5EPxSF?

5EPxSF seems to be the choice for cream of the crop quality from what I'm hearing. I like the whole collabo idea and I'm all for supporting SF. But how is the fit? I'm the slim straight kinda guy (which is why I like the fit of my slim jims so much). i'm reading on the measurements and it seems like it fits that description. I like the leg opening around 13-14" so that's good. Only problem I see really is the inseam. If I could get them custom hemmed then I'd probably go for that. I don't really like to trust tailors or dry cleaners hemming my jeans. I'd rather have them hemmed from the place where I'm getting them from if possible.

KMW 1980 still sounds awesome but I'm probably not going to be finding anything available in my size real soon.

Just checked out the 5EPxSF jeans post thread. I WANT THESE JEANS! The only thing that's turning me off is the inseam. I'm really scared of screwing up if I get them hemmed. If I were to get them to a 30" inseam would that affect the fit in any way.

Didn't think it was. I thought he was in the process of moving to bigger production runs.

I wear a 30 or 32 inseam, and I've had some cuts not work out because of hemming--I don't think this would be a problem with the 5EPs. It's mostly an issue with bootcuts and distressed jeans. However, I'm just wearing the long (34) inseam and letting it fall where it may. Are you anti-stacking?

Where do you live? A number of cities will have specialists in denim tailoring. Otherwise, why not get them, measure where you want them hemed to, and send them to a reputable shop? I agree in not dealing with tailors or dry cleaners when it comes to my jeans.

They do have less blue in it, but my 1980's have this nice tint of grey in them that makes them one of my most versatile jeans imo.

not anti-stacking. im just a short guy.

and yes the ande whalls are available right now. its limited edition streaky denim grifters and he does custom hemming.

i guess i can look up some specialized tailors in my area, but that's too much a hassle for me already. i'd like to wear my jeans right when i get them. 32" are even stacked for me, but perfectly.

It's down to two folks:

ande whall grifters
+streaky denim
+custom hemming
+hand-crafted / one-of-a-kind (unique)
+measurements
+awesome aging pictures
-backpocket design
-6 to 12 business day shipping
-non-selvedge (does it even matter anymore?)

kmw 1980s
+japanese denim
+natural indigo
+selvedge
+2/3 day shipping
-lack of backpocket design
-unsure about the fit

decided not to go with the 5EPxSF for the reasons I've posted already. these two jeans are available for me to get RIGHT NOW. prices are around the same. $185 for the aw's and $192.50 for the kmw's (after 30% $275 @ revolve).

revolve is listing the kmw 1980's at 17" in knee/leg opening. is that true? if so, that's not really a "slim" fit to me like it's listed. if anyone can tell me how they actually fit that'd be great. same goes for the grifters.

There are tons of tailors in Orange County that could hem your jeans for you in one day for $12.

I own jeans from all three of these companies and the 5EPxSF are by far the best FWIW. The 1980s are not really that slim, IMO, they're more just straight.

I don't think they're really all that skinny from the pics I've seen. I think the fit is pretty similar to the 5EPxSF. The Grifters are probably in between the 1980 and 5EPxSF.

well i did it...i ordered the Ande Whall Grifters. I figured it'd be the best for me right now considering the price and length. Turnaround time was really the only thing that bothered me, but there's good news to that.

By the time it ships I'll have my next pay check and I'm either gonna get the KMWs or 5EPxSF. Somewhere along the road I'll get the alternative.

Alternating between two jeans isn't that bad right? I'm so used to wearing my Jims the whole year and that's it. Plus my friends won't look at me dirty.
