So I picked up a couple shirts today from the Tailor - and on my Zegna they sewed right over it - like it wasn't even there. WTF now I have this shirt with a Gusset that I cant even show.

Is that normal practice?

I think it's always the responsibility of the craftsman or specialist - the tailor - to ask the customer how he wants something handled. The specialist has all the knowledge. It's wrong to assume the customer knows all the ins and outs and details he should know to ask about.

Gussets may be stupid and a pain to work with but they are part of what makes the shirt special and what gives the wearer pleasure knowing they are there.

They should have asked before sewing right over it. I would take it back and have them fix it.

+1 one.

My Tailor always keeps the gussets in place.

I have the same problem with split-rear waistband. most tailors (at least the ones I go to) don't seem to want to keep the split going after the alteration.
