Good shoes will last many years if you look after them. If you're spending £100 on M&S shoes every twelve months, for several of which the shoes are barely hanging on, it makes financial sense. Good shoecare will enhance the lifespan of your wet weather / second best shoes too.

As was mentioned above, don't be afraid to return them if you aren't 100% happy. At this price point you can be picky as you like (within reason). Otherwise they are fine shoes, enjoy them.

Yes, fit is more important than anything, despite what some may say. And great shoes will completely lift an 'ok' fused suit that fits well. Better to have good quality shoes and a cheap-er suit that fits well than an expensive, canvassed suit with cheap shoes.

I knew a man that had a good mtm suit for his wedding (and thereafter) who wore it with c.£60 non-GY shoes. The effect is more jarring than wearing £200+ shoes with a fused non pure wool suit that fits great. Women also really appreciate good shoes, if you care about such things too.

OK, I have received the Cheaney shoes and they look great. This is going to sound like a really stupid question...how do I tell if the fit is good?

It really depends on the last and your foot. Only you know whether it is comfortable, although even a shoe that fits can be uncomfortable at first. That said, on a formal Oxford like that, I would like the laces to close entirely. That is partly my preference and partly that they are designed to do that. So you may need a larger width. Not a deal breaker if they feel right though.
