Straightforward question:

What do you recommend for a proper British shoe that has some flair, i.e. is a bit fashion forward: Barker Black or AS Handgrade.

I have been reading the threads on both so I have a rough idea on where they stand, and I also know that price-wise there is a gap that is not easily ignored-but
I feel they both address similar market needs and hence customers. So what shall it be do I but one or the other?

NB: Said budget gap can be bridged with appropriate prodding from members

Imo the main reason to get BBs is the skull and crossbones, which I don't like.
AS's exclusive line costs a bit less and gives you all kinds of options. I'd go MTO w/ AS in the price range that's most comfortable for you.

I own a few BBs. For comfort, they are they best shoes I own. The Archdale in particular is a gorgeous shoe. The BB skull/crossbone shouldn't be a big disincentive because most people don't notice them unless they are examining your shoe medallion (and how often does that actually happen in 'real life'?). If flair is your main goal, then BB might be your go-to choice.

so yes. I fully endorse the brand.

However, from what i've seen of AS, the designs are very elegant and the workmanship looks great. You can't go wrong either way.

Go with BB from the factory store.
