I never thought that it made any sense to be offended, or embarrassed, because someone else was wearing an item that I purchased off a rack. If I always wanted to look entirely unique, then I'd never buy anything off a rack again and have all of my clothes custom designed especially for me.

I think what it boils down to is that people will compare themselves to the other person and might not like their own verdict (e.g. wondering if you look as bad or worried that you don't look as nice.) Personally, I don't care if the other person looks bad, because I don't see it as a reflection of myself, and if the other person looks better, then I'm thrilled to have learned of a better way to wear the item.

Because I don't have the money for expensive clothes, this happens often to me and I can't remember ever being bothered when it did. Having said that, I consider fashion to be a fun game and don't take it very seriously at all.

Most of the clothes that I wear are the (relatively) obscure jeans and shirts that I've had for over a decade, so I've never run into anyone wearing anything that I am.

As for new things, not a lot of people wear a vest with a pocketwatch...
