    Well, I saw Obama walking somewhere on the news the other day in a sport coat and nice collars white open buttoned dress shirt and it looked pretty good.

    I remember reading and then hearing it on the news during the primaries a while back that politicians are supposed to dress conservatively and properly, but they should not dress overly well. The public receives them better this way in a psychological manner. Simply it makes the average joe feel as if he can relate to them more.

    +1. They don't want to look too much like a dandy, or too fancy, as they feel that it will alienate them from the "common man".

    Furthermore, I suspect that most politicians don't really care too much about clothing. At the risk of sounding cynical, I think that they are more concerning about accruing, and holding on to power/office, rather than checking to see that their trousers are hemmed to the correct length!

    Obama usually looks good compare to other politicians because he has the tall slender build, not because of he knows how to dress.

    As an interesting side note, George de Paris has been the presidential tailor for the past nine U.S. presidents.

    This seems to be a pic in Jersey during the flood so wouldn't expect people to dress up to meet the president but this guy couldn't at least put on a t-shirt?

    Nice dimple, but really boring tie.

    @dbc: good findings.

    In fact, the Jon Huntsman pic reflects what Yachting Man and JourneyMan (related?) said about looking like a dandy; the dimple makes him look "too cute".

    But hemming is something basic, not a dandysm. In fact, no politician shows up in public wearing a shirt or tie too long - even though many of their viewers do exactly that in daily life!

    They all look like they're wearing sloppy pajamas to me; honestly, those suits are so terrible I think I'd look more formal with just my tailored shirt if I stood next to them. As to the ruffled bottom of the trousers- the usual answer to that is incompetent tailors who tug on the suit as they're fitting you, including hiking the pants up halfway up the torso to get leg length. Unless a guy's wearing suspenders, the trousers are going to settle down farther on the hips after a minute or two of wear, but most tailors seem unaware of that.

    Well, Ron Paul just doesn't give a f**k, but that only excuses him...
