Have you ever seen (or worn) these successfully pulled off? Any tones, whatever the contrast (or lack thereof).

I have several pairs. Mainly leather / suede boots. I think they look just as good as the two-toned or multi-coloured shoes that most people seem to wear.

Yes, several pairs of suede/calf boots.
As soon as the Rand becomes a currency worth more than a handful of shiny beads, I'll be getting some spectators. Spectators are relatively flashy, so not for the self-conscious; the boots are much less so as your trouser leg covers most of the second color/texture, though I'm sure if you went with bright colors, they could be just as flashy.
