I'm on the left-coast visiting friends in Humbolt County and we are going to be driving into SF on Friday and hanging out till I catch my plane on Sunday. I think our days are pretty busy but we need something to do at night.

He's a stoner from Arcata, I'm more of a city-person. We're looking for bars/lounges (neither of us are up for "clubbing") or a good concert (reggae, punk, ska, indie). We want to keep it low-key, it's going to be a jeans-tshirt-sneakers kinda trip.

I found No Use For A Name playing in San Jose but it might be too far. Other than that we're up for anything. Any suggestions would be great!

Check out North Beach. Casual, some good Italian food, and a good vibe on the street. Plenty of small bars there, and throughout the city.

Also, check out the Tonga Room at the Fairmont Hotel. The hotel itself is really upscale, but the Room is basically a Tiki bar converted from an indoor pool enclosure. The stage for whoever is playing that night floats in the middle of the pool. It isn't cheap--I think drinks were around $10 a pop when I was last there around two years ago--but it's fun, friendly, and casual.

Go to Matt's house -- you can check Google Street View to make sure he's home.

I've been to the Tonga Room. It's fun. But I'm not sure it's a jeans-and-sneakers place (could be wrong, though, I'm years removed from the "scene"). You might check out who's playing at Miss Pear's Jam House, which has (or had) good Caribbean food and reggae/ska music.

off the top of my head here's what I would check out if I was a "stoner" type and wanted low key evening activities, no clubby...

Toronado beer bar
Cha Cha Cha tapas
Zeitgeist outdoor pub (order a bloody mary)
Mission around valencia (ton of bars and restaurants)
strip clubs (an SF institution) just kidding

The Toronado is still there? That's the biker bar way down Haight Street? Cool place with a good beer selection. Good call.

+1 on the strip clubs. Mitchell Brothers is an institution.

Toronado, Mad Dog and the Fog and Noc-Noc are in a cluster. Good bars. Cha Cha Cha is pretty good, but not like it was years ago.

Miss Pearl's no longer exists. It is some weird upscale place now.

Bummer. I assume the Phoenix Hotel is something else now too, then.
