What exactly is it and how is it used? Is it like Facebook? Is it like a blog or is it just to post short personal messages/updates? Can you post comments to someone elses Twitter and get answers or comments back from them?

i'm still learning to use twitter (work-related). very different in function than facebook. facebook is like conversations at a crowded bar ... you skip from one to the other but occasionally engage. twitter seems a lot more like a bunch of people shouting at each other but nobody listening. very little actual interaction. people seem to like the best bon mots.

I got on it because I saw that Skylar Diggins (the WNBA women's basketball star) was on it and had a humungous number of "followers". I wanted to see what it was like.

What exactly is a "tweet"? Is it a message to someone? If you "tweet" someone does it show up on their Twitter ?

you "follow" people and other people "follow" you. when you "tweet" something, it's visible to your followers. when you tweet a response to something, or when you include someone else's address in your tweet, it's visible to their followers as well. i think it's mostly a headline service. you can't offer much beyond the thinnest of quips. that said, my favorite follows are christy teigen and the voice of god (he follows only one person -- justin bieber). both of them are really funny.

I like twitter because I can make fat people jokes and stupid people jokes. If I did that on Facebook, somebody would get offended, then the comments would start an open debate about how I need some sensitivity training, etc etc.

actually, that's about as sound an explanation for the existence of twitter as any i've heard yet.
