Today, January 28th, is the 25th anniversary of the Challenger explosion. I was in 8th grade math class when I heard the news from the teacher.

Where were you?

Wow. I was in freshman geography class, and it was surreal for a number of reasons.

I attended a parochial boys-only prep school that year, and the quality of teaching was...shall we say...uneven. Our geography teacher in particular claimed to be a professional wrestler (if anything he was a luchador) and was a notorious bullshitter in general, so when we entered his classroom and heard that the Challenger exploded, the common response was 'yeah, right'. Then we went into the a/v room and watched the replays for about 15 minutes.

I don't think I saw it live. I think I heard about it and then saw it on TV later. I was working (my first job out of college) and remember being in a men's clothing store at lunch time and seeing the tape on TV for the first time. Very troubling.

I was in the first grade. I remember the teacher telling us that we had to finish all of our work if we wanted to watch it live on TV.

I was still at that age where the Space Program was one of the coolest things in the world to me, and being an astronaut still seemed like a legitimate career path, so it was a huge deal in my six-year-old mind. It's one of those things I'll always remember vividly.

I think I'm still at that age now! NASA is so cool.

+1

I stayed home from school that day (which I did a lot) and saw it on tv.

I saw it on a TV in a Marine helicopter squadron ready room. It took about a day for the jokes to start. The one which sticks in my mind:

What were Christa McAuliffe's last words? "Hey, what does this button do?"

I remember seeing that in class. I was trying to talk to this chick Samantha who I was hardcore crushing on at the time. She cried, I comforted her while I was really scared on the inside. Big day. Big day. I think I kissed her on the cheek on the bus home.
