A search of existing threads failed to turn up answers to a question I have. Sometime this year, I plan to buy a tuxedo that I believe I will have occasion to wear at least a few times a year. In addition to appearance and comfort, wrinkle resistance and durability under pressings are significant factors to me in the purchase. Anything high-end will not be an option, as my budget for the purchase likely will not exceed $200-$300 USD for jacket and pants. In this price range, what is the best fabric choice in terms of wrinkle resistance and withstanding pressings: 100% wool, 100% polyester, poly/wool blend, or viscose? Assistance highly appreciated.

I have to say your budget is too tight for a proper dinner suit.

If I were working with that tight a budget, I'd find something in wool that fits the classic definition of "tuxedo" (see http://www.blacktieguide.com for more) and take it to a tailor to make certain it fits properly.

Something like this, for instance... 1B, peak lapel, 100% wool, costs less than two rentals although about that caliber of construction, and leaves some money left over for a decent tailor to adjust whatever needs adjustment.

I recently purchased a Joseph A. Bank peak-lapel single-button tuxedo that I think will work for you. It also has no vents and has grosgrain-faced lapels. Here is a link to the product: http://www.josbank.com/menswear/shop/Product_11001_10050_101786
It is listed at $399 right now, but I ended up getting it for $299 a few weeks ago. If you wait, it may drop back down to that price.

Most people on this forum don't think Jos A Bank are very good quality and won't last too long. This is not a huge concern for me, as I will probably wear this once a year at most. Since you are looking to wear yours more often, you may want to spend a bit more and get something that will hold up better.

In the price range that you are operating within, I would agree that you would be well served purchasing a tuxedo online from a discount retailer like www.uniformalwearhouse.com or my favorite, www.myowntuxedo.com. Prices will be reasonable and you'll be able to snag a tropical worsted wool coat and trouser combo for under $200. A little more and you could upgrade to a Super 100, 110, or 120 thread count.

Durability shouldn't be an issue. Most if not all of the tuxedos sold there were actually manufactured as rental garments. That means that they will be built sturdier to withstand frequent use by multiple wearers and lots of dry cleaning and pressing for many years. Unlike rental tuxedos though, yours will be new. The savings should leave you with a nice sturdy tuxedo that you can afford to have alterred where necessary.

Check out this DB:

I hope this helps!

Hi John,

We are an online formalwear retailer and have a few quality tuxedos that fall within your price range. If you are not focused on brand, I would highly recommend one of our tuxedo packages that you could find here:

Other than that, please view the following, all within your price range:

OP, if you still need a tuxedo and can jump on it today, Jos Bank is running a 70%-off-everything sale until midnight tonight.

The link above will get you a classic tuxedo of decent construction for $268.50.
