So, you shouldn't wear a tuxedo before 6 P.M. But what about those events starting at hours like 4:30 P.M.?
It would be very uncomfortable to have to leave after an hour and a half in order to change into a tuxedo.

If the event starts after 6pm but you have to leave your home earlier, say at 4:30pm - it is acceptable to wear to a dinner suit when leaving.

If the event starts before 6pm but has a late finish? Depends, if it is formal event or a none-formal event. Although a formal event should not start before 6pm, I think we should accept that it is not always possible, I would not have an issue attending a formal event starting at 5:00pm (for example).

If Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal is a guest, you are pretty much screwed unless you keep to Saudi time.

In the United States, tailcoats, both morning and evening, have been all but abandoned. Therefore, if an event is formal and daytime, rightly or wrongly, I think you'll see a lot of people in tuxedos and I doubt you'll feel out of place. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if a daytime formal wedding said "black tie" on the invitation.

I would go with what part of the day the majority of the event takes place in, though. What are the specifics you're thinking about?
