^^ You need the warm embrace (and more ) of a woman, not the cold shoulder of SF

Hahaha! My Monday mornings are spent in the warm embrace of a TSA agent groping me while I head out to the airport.

Pretty sure he was talking about the cuff. Frankly, I consider the shawl collar a bit of a "trendy" item as well. It's a classic, but it seems to really have made a comeback in the last year or so and I don't know that there will be nearly as many sold a few years from not. Might be sort of a cool thing to have in the back of the closet. Might go try it again today, see how I feel the second time around.

forgive my ignorance, but is a one button cuff not traditional for a tux?

I only have one and it's my father's from around the late 70's, 1B, satin shawl collar, 1 button cuffs and (gulp) ventless).

There's nothing "wrong" with a single button cuff on a dinner jacket.

Of all the things to consider about a dinner suit, your cuff buttons are far, far down the list.

The two most impotent things? First, it must look great and second, it must fit.

Perhaps both can be done with a cheaply made item, but I doubt it. If you're strapped for cash, this is an area in which going used can work if you have time, patience, and taste.

Since this is H&M we are discussing, I would wager serious geetus that the lining is polyester - an unpardonable sin.

I know there's not much love for ventless jackets on this forum besides me and Cary Grant (the poster not the dead actor) but if you take another look at Connery in Dr. No, often used as an example of quintessential evening wear, his shawl collared dinner jacket has side vents and it looks crap flapping around his arse like that. Would have looked much better as a butt-hugging ventless version.

I walked back through and snapped a couple shots. Not fit pics, but still gives an idea of the overall look of the garment. Crappy phone cam, so please forgive quality. Assuming the flaps can be removed and the loops covered by a cummerbund (if tailor says they can't be removed), what's the verdict on the aesthetic?

I don't think Connery's dinner jacket in Dr. No is a good example of quintessential evening wear, and I am the biggest Bond fan around. The main problem is the lack of a waist covering. But I think you're making the side vents out to be a bigger issue than they are. They are probably only about 8 inches long, so they aren't flapping about all that much. But if you want to see Connery in a vent-less dinner jacket watch Goldfinger or Thunderball.

I can't imagine what idiot thought that a tuxedo required belt loops. What I really don't know is whether it's better that they're satin belt loops.

I'm guessing the rise on the pants is too low.

If the length of the body was long enough, the sleeves would be way too long and the button stance would be way too low. Pocket flaps are bad but an easy fix. Belt loops are bad enough on a lounge suit (I never use them) but there's no excuse for them on a dinner suit.
