Turtleneck with or without a scarf?

Hey, I'm new to the forum, so I apologize if this is going in the wrong place. Anyhow, I have never known the "proper" answer to this, so any thoughts would be appreciated: in winter, I always wear a scarf, except when I'm wearing a turtleneck. I find that the turtleneck tends to stick out of the scarf and it looks a little weird, so in these cases I'll only wear the scarf if it's REALLY cold. Is this a generally acceptable way to do things?

Makes sense to me. President Bush 41 was wearing a turtleneck and scarf at the inauguration and it looked fine. I also think it's fine to not wear the scarf if it's not cold enough for both.

I think both ways are fine. And no problem if the neck sticks out - your scarf and turtleneck should be coordinated so it will look ok.

I am wearing a silk/cashmere purple neck today with a stripey woolen scarf in pink/grey/purple stripes.

While I kind of agree that its ok to wear both, in a way its like wearing a pocket watch and a wrist watch at the same time. The turtle neck is supposed to keep the neck warm, and so is the scarf, so wearing both is not for functional reasons.

Right on, thanks guys. I've usually gone with my gut and sense of aesthetics on little things like this, but every once in a while, I get apprehensive that I'm breaking some rule...
