What colors do you think would work underneath a black cardigan? I know white would work for sure, gray might but its not my color

Do you think light blue, royal blue, red, purple, would work? I don't have any plain tshirts to try on with the cardigan at the moment.

Agreed. I think you'd want to keep the colours on the dark side. I'd have never thought of purple, its not a colour I wear, but I think it would look quite good.

any solid color shirt will go with a solid black cardigan.. don't be afraid of color.

i'd be more wary of design than color

+1 for purple, very underrated color. I wear purple shirts all the time, generally lavender. Looks great with black. I get a lot of complements from women when I wear purple.

I have a purple shirt that gets complimented a lot as well. I always thought it was a bit odd. Not a colour I usually think of, but seems to be liked.

doesn't matter what colour as long as it's solid

I feel the best color choices would be a lighter royal blue or charcoal. Both of those can look fantastic if they're the right shade.

If the cardigan is a pure black, then I find a pure white against it can look too harsh.

I find pure red and other bright colors to be difficult to pair with an excess of black. Black tends to intensify the colors it surrounds, so an already bright color peeking out through a black cardigan can look odd. It almost reminds me of a 1980's color scheme-- very unsophisticated looking.

I've noticed older people (especially older women) will often mix a pure black with pure red (and no other colors in the outfit). I think it looks awful 9 out of 10 times.

I haven't tried purple, but I suspect it would be far better choice than red.

A black/white gingham button down looks great under a black cardigan. So pattern can work. However, the original poster was asking about a t-shirt.

patterns do work, but jaychiz was most likely implying that "any solid colored tee will be fine"

a plain and simple black cardigan shouldn't require so much deliberation as to what to wear with ot

i see your point being that it is an all black cardigan....imo white works pretty well with an all black cardigan however i tried on royal blue and it doesnt look quite right

i can see purple (maybe with a design on the shirt), dark navy/blue working really well
maybe light blue and a deep red
